From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-r(j)a-j/s/t. Cognate with Tibetan བཞད (bzhad, “to laugh, smile”), Sichuan Yi ꒉ (yy, “to laugh, smile”), and Lisu ꓪꓽ (ꓫꓱꓻ) (wɑ̀ (ʃø), “to laugh”).
