From Proto-Tai *sɤmᶜ (“เปรี้ยว”). Cognate with Thai ส้ม (sôm), Shan သူမ်ႈ (sūum), Ahom 𑜏𑜤𑜪 (sum), Zhuang soemj. Compare Middle Chinese 酸 (MC suɑn, “sour”).
