From Proto-Tai *ʔaːnᴮ (“to recite”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᩋ᩵ᩣ᩠ᨶ, Lao ອ່ານ (’ān), Lü ᦀᦱᧃᧈ (q̇aan1), Shan ဢၢၼ်ႇ (’aan2), Ahom 𑜒𑜃𑜫 (’an). Compare Khmer អាន (ʾaan).
