From Pali abhipāla (“protector”), from abhi (“over; upon; etc”) + pāla (“guardian; keeper; custodian; etc”), or from Sanskrit अभिपाल (abhipāla, “protector”), अभि (abhi, “over; upon; etc”) + पाल (pāla, “guardian; keeper; custodian; etc”), equivalent to อภิ + บาล (baan). Cognate with Khmer អភិបាល (ʾɑɑphibaal).
