From Proto-Tai *hɤmᴮ (“to cover (with cloth)”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᩉᩫ᩠᩵ᨾ, Lao ຫົ່ມ (hom), Lü ᦠᦳᧄᧈ (ḣum1), Shan ႁူမ်ႇ (hùum), Ahom 𑜑𑜤𑜪 (hum).
