From Proto-Tai *ʰmoːkᴰ (fog, mist), from Old Chinese (OC *moɡs, *moːŋ, “fog, mist”). Cognate with Lao ໝອກ (mǭk), Shan မွၵ်ႇ (mòak) in မွၵ်ႇၵုမ်ႈ (mòak kūm), Ahom 𑜉𑜨𑜀𑜫 (mok).
