Etymology

From Proto-Tai *soːŋᴬ, from Middle Chinese (MC ʃˠʌŋ, “two”). Cognate with Tai Dam song, Lao ສອງ (sǭng), ᦉᦸᧂ (ṡoang), Shan သွင် (sǒang), Tai Nüa ᥔᥩᥒᥴ (soang1) and Zhuang song.

Usage notes

When "two" is at the position of tens, use ยี่ (yîi) as ยี่สิบ (yîi-sìp) instead. There was a suggestion to read "two" as โท (too) while calling or saying a phone number, to distinguish from สาม (sǎam), due to dated low-quality voicing technology.
