From Proto-Tai *ɟaŋᴮ, probably from Middle Chinese (MC t͡ɕʰɨŋH, “scales”) or (MC t͡ɕʰɨŋ, t͡ɕʰɨŋH, “to weigh”). Cognate with Lao ຊັ່ງ (sang), Shan ၸင်ႈ (tsāng).
