From Old Khmer calācala (social unrest; social instability), ultimately from Sanskrit चलाचल (calācala, changeable; tremulous; unsteady; etc., literally chaotic and unchaotic; moving and not moving; stable and unstable) or Pali calācala, having the same meaning as Sanskrit. Compare Modern Khmer ចលាចល (châléachlô).
