From Proto-Southwestern Tai *ɡiːmᴬ (“pliers, tongs”), from Proto-Tai *ɡiːmᴬ (“pliers, tongs”), from Middle Chinese 鉗 (MC ɡˠiᴇm, “pliers, tongs”). Cognate with Lao ຄີມ (khīm), Tai Dam ꪁꪲꪣ, Shan ၵိမ်း (kim4).
