From Sanskrit क्षत्री (kṣatrī), feminine form of क्षत्र (kṣatra, “kṣatriya: member of the warrior caste, the caste itself”); perhaps via Old Khmer khsatrī (“female of the kṣatriya or warrior caste: queen, princess, etc”). Cognate with Modern Khmer ក្សត្រី (ksɑtrii).
