Etymology

From Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀭𑀳𑀤𑀺 (rahadi), from Sanskrit *रहति (rahati, “to remain, stay”). Cognate with Marathi राहणे (rāhṇe), Hindi रहना (rahnā), Nepali रहनु (rahanu), Assamese ৰোৱা (rüa).

Verb

રહેવું • (rahevũ)

1. to stay, remain

   તું અહિયાં જ રહે

   tũ ahiyā̃ ja rahe

   you stay right here

2. to reside, dwell, live

   હું સુરતમાં રહું છું હવે

   hũ suratmā̃ rahũ chũ have

   I live in Surat now

3. to be located

   એ ત્યાં રહ્યો!

   e tyā̃ rahyo!

   there he is!
