From Sauraseni Prakrit *𑀧𑀅𑀤𑀺 (*paädi) (a possible variant of 𑀧𑀟𑀤𑀺 (paḍadi)), from Sanskrit पतति (pátati, “to fall, fly”). Cognate with Hindi पड़ना (paṛnā).
