From Proto-Indo-Iranian *ĵʰáwtā (“pourer”), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰéwtōr, from *ǵʰew- (“to pour”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬰𐬀𐬊𐬙𐬀𐬭 (zaotar).
