From Proto-Indo-Iranian *smárati, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)mer-. Indo-Iranian cognates include Persian (šomordan, “to calculate”), Kurdish ژماردن‎ (žmārdin, “to count”) and Pashto شمېرل‎ (śmerël, “to count”). Akin to Ancient Greek μέρμερος (mérmeros, “mischievous, baneful”) and Latin memor (“mindful”).
