From Proto-Indo-Iranian *smárati, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)mer-. Indo-Iranian cognates include Persian شمردن (šomordan, “to calculate”), Kurdish ژماردن (žmārdin, “to count”) and Pashto شمېرل (śmerël, “to count”). Akin to Ancient Greek μέρμερος (mérmeros, “mischievous, baneful”) and Latin memor (“mindful”).
