From Proto-Indo-Iranian *wayd-, from Proto-Indo-European *weyd- (“to know”). Cognate with Latin vidi (“to see”), Ancient Greek οἶδα (oîda, “to know”) originally having a digamma at the beginning an reading as voĩda.
