From Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hmayĵʰas, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃moyǵʰos (“urine”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬨𐬀𐬉𐬰𐬀 (maēza) and Old Armenian մէզ (mēz). Also related to the verb मेहति (mehati).
