Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Iranian *námas (to bow, prostrate). The primary meaning of "bow, salutation" is Rigvedic. It is an s-stem formed on the basis of the verbal root नम् (nam) (नमति (namati)), meaning "to bend, bow, to submit oneself".
