From Sanskrit घटीताड (ghaṭītāḍa), from घटी (ghaṭī) + ताड (tāḍa). Compare Old Marathi गडियाळा (gaḍiyāḷā), Gujarati ઘડિયાળ (ghaḍiyāḷ), Hindi घड़ियाल (ghaṛiyāl), Punjabi ਘਡ਼ਿਆਲ (ghaḍ਼iāla).
