Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *gʷerH- (“to welcome, greet, praise”). Cognates include Latin grātus (“welcome”), Old Church Slavonic жрьти (žrĭti, “to sacrifice”) and Old Prussian girtwei (“to praise”).
