Borrowed from Hebrew מלאך (mal'ákh, angel, messenger). Ultimately from Proto-Semitic *malʾak- (messenger). Compare the root ل ء ك (l-ʾ-k) and لَأَكَ (laʾaka, to send as a messenger).
