Akin to Avestan 𐬔𐬀𐬊𐬥𐬀 (gaona, “colour”), Persian گون (gun, “colour, species”), Ossetian хъуын (qwyn, “hair”), Kurdish gûn (“colour”). Old Armenian գոյն (goyn) is an Iranian borrowing. Compare Sanskrit गुण (guṇa, “thread, cord”).
