عشان

Etymology

From Arabic عَلَى‎ (ʿalā) + شَأْن‎ (šaʾn), thus literally “on the issue of”.

Preposition

عشان (ʿašān)

1. because of

   ‏ما فيي آكل خبز عشان مرضي‎

   Mā fīyī ʾākul ḵibiz ʿašān maraḍī.

   I can’t eat bread because of my sickness.

2. for; for the sake of

   ‏عملتي هيدا كله بس عشاني؟‎‎

   ʿMiltī haydā killu bas ʿašānī?

   Have you done all of this just for me?

Conjunction

عشان (ʿašān)

1. because

   ‏لازم روح عشان مرتي رجعت عالبيت‎

   Lāzim rūḥ ʿašān martī rijʿit ʿa-l-bayt.

   I must go because my wife has returned home.

2. so that

   ‏رح كرر مره تانيه عشان تفهمو منيح‎

   Raḥ karrir marra tānyi ʿašān tifhamū mnīḥ.

   I’ll repeat once more so that you understand well.
