From Arabic شَيْطَانَة (šayṭāna). Related to شَيَّطَ (šayyaṭa, “to scorch”), from ش ي ط (š-y-ṭ). Compare Classical Syriac ܣܛܢܐ (sāṭānā), Hebrew שָׂטָן (śāṭān), Ge'ez ሠይጣን (śäyṭan), Ge'ez ሰይጣን (säyṭan).
