Etymology

From شَرْمَطَ (šarmaṭa, to shred). Most Arab linguists agree that it is of non-Semitic origin. Compare Hebrew סְמַרְטוּט (s'martút, rag), Aramaic מַרְטוּטָא (marṭūṭā), סְמַרְטוּטָא (səmarṭūṭā, coarse garment).
