خوارزمية

Arabic

Etymology

Nisba of خَوَارِزْم (ḵawārizm, Khwarezm, Chorasmia), from Persian. So named after the Persian mathematician al-Khwarizmi, author of the treatise "الجمع والتفريق بحساب الهند" (Algoritmi de numero Indorum) which introduced algebra to Europe. The Arabic name is in fact a calque of Latin algorismus, derived from the Latin title of al-Khwarizmi's work.
