Etymology

From the root خ ط ب (ḵ-ṭ-b), related to marriage proposals and/or becoming engaged. Vd. the verb خَطَب (ḵaṭab, to ask in marriage) خطب إلى فلانة 'to ask so-and-so for marriage' and خطب على فلانة 'to hand over so-and-so in marriage'.
