From Middle Persian twhyg (tuhīg, “empty; vain, illusory; barren”), from Proto-Iranian *tuŝyás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *tuŝĉyás, from Proto-Indo-European *tews- (“to empty”). Cognate with Sanskrit तुच्छ्य (tucchyá).
