According to Arthur Jeffery it appears first in discussions of dietary laws and thus is likely borrowed from Hebrew בְּהֵמָה (behemá). Else it belongs to the root ب ه م (b-h-m) to which there is also بَهْمَة (bahma, “lamb”).
