Etymology
Ultimately from Old Aramaic שושמא (šūššmā), shortening of שומשומא (šumššemā), from Akkadian (Assyrian) 𒊭𒐊𒐊 (šamaššammū), [script needed] (šamaššammi, literally “oil plant”), compound of [script needed] (šaman, “oil”) and [script needed] (šammu, “plant”). Compare with Arabic سِمْسِم (simsim) and Classical Syriac ܫܘܫܡܐ (šūšmāʾ, šuššəmāʾ).
