Etymology
Ačaṙyan rejects all proposals and leaves the origin open.
Ałayan derives աւետ (awet), from Proto-Indo-European *awēd- and the spelling աւէտ (awēt) from *aweid-, both from the root *awed- (“to speak”); compare Ancient Greek ὕδω (húdō, “to tell of, to celebrate”), ἀείδω (aeídō, “to sing, to praise”), Sanskrit वदति (vadati, “to speak, say”), वन्दते (vandate, “to praise, celebrate”), Tocharian B wätk- (“to command, to order”). See Pokorny for this root, without the Armenian.
