According to J̌ahukyan, perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *āludi-, from the root *ālu- (“a bitter plant?”). See Pokorny for this root. Compare Sanskrit आलु (ālu, “an esculent root, Amorphophallus paeoniifolius”), आलुक (āluka, “the esculent root of Amorphophallus paeoniifolius”), Latin ālium (“garlic”), ālum (“species of comfrey plant”).
