From Old East Slavic уродъ (urodŭ, “feebleminded, witless, foolish”), from Old Church Slavonic ѫродъ (ǫrodŭ, “foolish, stupid”), the negation of род (rod, “birth, kind, race, generation”). Related to ро́жа (róža, “ugly mug”), from Old Church Slavonic ѫрожда (ǫrožda).
