Etymology

From Proto-Slavic *tъlmačь, from Proto-Turkic *tilmaç (compare Turkish dilmaç (“interpreter”)), from Proto-Turkic *til (“tongue”) (Turkish dil) + Proto-Turkic *-maç (“noun suffix”). Cognate with Slovene tolmač, Serbo-Croatian ту̀ма̄ч/tùmāč, Polish tłumacz (“translator”). Non-Slavic cognates include German Dolmetscher and Hungarian tolmács.
