Etymology
From Old East Slavic сѣмиꙗ (sěmija, “family, household; husband, wife”) (whence also Ukrainian сім'я́ (simʺjá) and Belarusian сям'я́ (sjamʺjá)), from Proto-Slavic *sěmьja. Compare Lithuanian šeima (“family”), Latvian sàimе (“family, household”), Old Prussian seimīns, Gothic 𐌷𐌰𐌹𐌼𐍃 (haims, “settlement”), Old High German heim (“home”), Ancient Greek κώμη (kṓmē, “settlement”).
