From Proto-Slavic *prisęga, a deverbative of прысягаць (prysjahacʹ), synchronically analysable as пры- (pry-) + сягаць (sjahacʹ). Cognate with Russian прися́га (prisjága), Ukrainian прися́га (prysjáha), Old Church Slavonic присѩга (prisjęga), Slovene priséga, Czech přísaha, Slovak prísaha, Polish przysięga, Upper Sorbian přisaha, Lower Sorbian pśisega.
