From Proto-Slavic *plьvati, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ptyēw- (“to spit, vomit”). Akin to Ancient Greek πτύω (ptúō), Latin spuō, Old English spīwan (whence modern English spew), Old Armenian թուք (tʿukʿ), Sanskrit ष्ठीवति (ṣṭhīvati).
