From Proto-Slavic *divъ, probably from Proto-Balto-Slavic *deiwas, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *deywós (“god”), with the alternate sense of "demon" probably taken from an Iranian language (compare Persian دیو (div)), ultimately of the same source. Compare диво (divo).
