From Proto-Slavic *gǫba. Cognate with Bulgarian гъба (gǎba), Slovene goba, Slovak huba, Serbo-Croatian губа/guba, Russian губка (gubka). Non-Slavic cognates include Pashto غومبه (γumba, “swelling”). Compare Latin fungus, Ancient Greek σπόγγος (spóngos).
