From Old East Slavic вьрвь (vĭrvĭ), from Proto-Slavic *vьrvь, deverbal of *verti. Compare Ukrainian вірьовка (virʹovka), Bulgarian вяроўка (vjaroўka), Old Church Slavonic връвь (vrŭvĭ). Non-Slaiv cognates include Ancient Greek ἐρύω (erúō, I drag, pull) and Sanskrit वरत्रा (varatrā).
