Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰm̥may, a case form (perhaps dative or a fossilized directive?) of Proto-Indo-European *dʰéǵʰōm (whence also χθών (khthṓn, earth). Cognates include Latin humī. Also compare πάλαι (pálai) and παραί (paraí).
