Uncertain. Has traditionally been connected with νήχω (nḗkhō, “I swim”) (from Proto-Indo-European *(s)neh₂- (“to flow, to swim”)). Has also been connected with Latin īnsula. Ultimately, perhaps a Pre-Greek borrowing.
