Uncertain. Has traditionally been connected with νήχω (nḗkhō, I swim) (from Proto-Indo-European *(s)neh₂- (to flow, to swim)). Has also been connected with Latin īnsula. Ultimately, perhaps a Pre-Greek borrowing.
