Etymology
Unknown. Claimed by ancient writers to derive from Καστανέα (Kastanéa), a location in Asia Minor, but the location itself is most likely named after the tree. Potentially from the Doric κάστον (káston, “wood”). Compare also with Old Armenian կասկ (kask).
