From Middle Indic (compare Pali siṅgivera, Sanskrit शृङ्गवेर (śṛṅgavera)) (influenced by शृङ्गं (śṛṅgaṃ, “horn”)), from Old Tamil இந்சி வேர் (iṅci vēr, literally “ginger root”) (modern Tamil இஞ்சி (iñci, “ginger”), வேர் (vēr, “root”)).
