From Byzantine Greek ἀλωπού (alōpoú), from Byzantine Greek ἀλωπώ (alōpṓ), from Ancient Greek ἀλώπηξ (alṓpēx), from Proto-Hellenic *alōpēḱos (similar to Old Armenian աղուէս (ałuēs)), diminutive of Proto-Indo-European *h₂wl(o)p ~ *h₂ulp (“(red) fox”) (compare Latin volpēs, Lithuanian lãpė, Albanian dhelpër, Persian روباه (rubâh)).
