From Proto-Vietic *toc ~ *tuːc, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *t₁ut ~ *t₁uut ~ *t₁uc ~ *t₁uuc (“to light”); cognate with Muong tốch, Khmer ដុត (dot, “to set light to, burn, grill”), Khasi thuit (“to catch fire”).
