From Proto-Tocharian *ākru, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eḱru- < *dáḱru- < *dr̥ḱ-h₂eḱru- (“eye bitter”) (compare *dáḱru-). Compare Tocharian B akrūna, Sanskrit अश्रु (áśru), Avestan asrū-, Lithuanian ãšara, Latvian asara.
