From Proto-Vietic *ʔoːlʔ (“to choke while eating”), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *ʔul() ~ *ʔuəlʔ ~ *ʔəl() ~ *hul() (“nausea; to choke; to vomit”). Cognate with Chut [Rục] /ʔoːl³/, Arem /ʔuəlˀ/ ("to choke") Khmer អួល (ʾuəl, “to gag; to choke”).
