From Proto-Vietic *ʔoːlʔ (to choke while eating), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *ʔul() ~ *ʔuəlʔ ~ *ʔəl() ~ *hul() (nausea; to choke; to vomit). Cognate with Chut [Rục] /ʔoːl³/, Arem /ʔuəlˀ/ ("to choke") Khmer អួល (ʾuəl, to gag; to choke).
