From Middle French escueil, from Old Occitan escueyll, from Vulgar Latin *scoclu, from Latin scopulus, from Ancient Greek σκόπελος (skópelos, “lookout place: hence peak, headland, promontory”). Compare Italian scoglio and the derived Portuguese escolho / Spanish escollo.
