From Gothic *𐌰𐌻𐌼𐍃 (*alms, “elm, elm-like trees”), related to Old Norse almr (“elm”), from Proto-Germanic *elmaz, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁élem (“mountain elm”).
Possibly influenced by Celtiberian: see also Asturian llamera); akin to Irish leamhán (“elm”), Welsh llwyf (“elm”).
